Learn How To Stop Puppy Chewing

Learning how to stop puppy chewing is a task many want to control but must understand that it is a natural thing for puppies to do on a daily basis. Generally you will find that they are chewing on things because of pure boredom or because they are teething. You do not want to stop your puppy from chewing but you want to make sure they know what the proper things are to chew on. This is obviously a challenging task but they can be trained in a fairly quick time frame on proper things to chew. Obviously helping them prevent boredom will greatly reduce the odds of them wanting to chew on your carpet, boots or couch! Why Should You Stop Puppy Chewing When new puppy owners get their new bundle of joy they assume it is fine if they chew on everything because after all it is considered natural. Then you have those that will take the other extreme and yell at their puppy when they chew on something and this will cause your puppy to become confused. This confusion you create for your puppy will lead to other additional behavioral problems that you will not want. You will need to find the balance point of both of these that will help train your dog to understand that there are many things that they are allowed to chew on but other items are off limits for chewing.

Learning How To Stop Puppy Chewing

Learning the necessary skills to stop puppy chewing encompass several things. For starters, it is important that you do not yell at or hit your dog for this behavior. At times you will become extremely annoyed with your puppies chewing but it is critical that you do not take this out on your puppy for any reason. This will only cause confusion for your puppy and as stated it will lead to additional behavioral problems. Things you should take into consideration are:

Adjustment of Behavior – Instead of fighting an uphill battle with your puppy you should focus on training them the proper items to chew on in the house. If you catch your puppy chewing on your boot, take a toy that is allowed for chewing and give it to them. Tell them no when you take the boot from them and once they start chewing on their approved chewing toy you should praise them. This will help them understand the proper things to chew on.

Make Sure You Keep Them Busy – A bored puppy will always look for things to get into. So obviously the more entertained you can keep them the less boredom they will have. When you are with your puppy it is important that you play with them and allow them to run around for exercise. Obviously you can’t be with them at all times, so when you are away give them toys to play with because this will keep them entertained for the period of time that you are gone.

Proper Crate Training – By having your puppy crate trained this will drastically help you cut down on the trouble they can get into while you are gone. By having them properly crate trained they can only get access to their toys while you are away and can’t create damage to other items within the house.

Remain Consistent With Your Training As you can see the overall theme with all training revolves around consistency. As long as you remain dedicated to your training pattern with your puppy they will quickly learn the correct behaviors to follow. With consistency you will see that learning how to stop puppy chewing is relatively easy.

When first getting your new puppy you will want to learn about puppy house training. One of the first steps of house training is of course potty training your puppy. Optimally you will want to train your puppy to use the bathroom outside. However, in some cases this is not possible and you will have to setup a designated area inside for your puppy to use the bathroom. It is important to understand when learning how to potty train a puppy you will have to be patient and consistent. Without putting both of these into practice you will have a hard time with this training.

Top Tips – Puppy House Training Techniques – Potty Training

This is the first step many new puppy owners want to learn, and for obvious reasons. Many people look at this method of training as a negative and unpleasant experience. Owners should not look at this as that. They should look at it as an experience that is both rewarding to their new puppy and themselves. Overall having a puppy that is house trained properly will be much happier and you both will benefit from this.

As soon as you arrive home with your new puppy you should start learning how to potty train them. It is important that you do not get mad at your puppy if they have an accident. They do not want to make a mess but at this young stage they do not have full control of their bodily functions.

You will want to get on a proper feeding schedule and keep this consistent by feeding them at the same time each day. It is best not to feed them four hours before it is time for bed and remove access to water about two hours before they go to bed. Make sure you remain consistent on this because without remaining consistent the puppy will not lean the proper schedule and will continue to have puppy house training problems.

Again, by sticking with a schedule the first thing you should do when you get up is to take your puppy for a walk. Also, shortly after they finish eating their meal you will want to take them for a walk to use the bathroom. You will find that your puppy will want to play with you versus using the bathroom. It is important that you tell them “Go Potty!” before playing with them.

If your puppy has not gone to the bathroom within 15 to 20 minutes return them to their crate and take them out again in about 15 minutes and repeat the same process. Once your puppy uses the bathroom make sure you reinforce their good behavior by telling them that they were good and reward them with a treat.

Finally, another good tip in the event your puppy has an accident is to keep them in a room with tile floors. This will make your cleanup easier. Once your puppy is properly trained with their puppy house training you can allow them into other rooms of the house.

In closing, remember to be consistent with your training and you will receive the desired results you want. Puppy house training will make for a rewarding experience for both you and your puppy so always have fun when training your new puppy.

As a new puppy owner you will learn that if puppies love to do one thing that is to dig, it is a favorite activity of theirs. Obviously you want to prevent your puppy from digging as it will become bothersome to see them digging holes under your fence, in your yard and of course your precious garden! Some people opt to keep their puppies inside more to avoid this behavior. There are two problems with this method of training. First, it will not stop them from digging outside once they are outside. Second, they will in turn start digging at things inside the house such as your nice wood floors, the couch, the carpet, etc. So it is important to understand that it is within the puppy’s nature to want to dig.

Top 5 Tips – How to Stop Puppy Digging

Tip #1 –How to Stop Puppy Digging – Designated Digging Area

Now, keep in mind it is important to understand that a dog naturally wants to dig. You will want to setup a designated area your puppy can dig in. The perfect idea for this is to setup a sandbox that is just for them to dig in. It is important that you teach them that this is their area for digging and not elsewhere in your yard. Obviously a good idea to help them understand this is to put some of their toys in there. Also, burying an occasional treat can be fun for them and it will help them learn this is their digging area. Once your puppy figures out this is where his toys and treats can be found they are less prone to dig in other locations of the yard.

Tip #2 – How to Stop Puppy Digging in Your Garden

Obviously the last thing you will want is your new puppy digging up your garden! This can be a problem when you first get them, however, by training them to use a designated digging area you will have much less trouble with them wanting to mess around in the garden. When you see your puppy is digging in the garden you will want to tell them “NO!” and direct them to their area for digging. It will not take them long to understand the proper location for digging. Also, make certain that you tell them that they are good and reinforce the proper behavior when they are digging in the proper area for digging.

Tip #3 – How to Stop Puppy Digging – Avoid My Flowers!

Another good trick you can employ is the use of chili powder around your flower garden. When you use chili powder in combination with your watering you will have much better success at keeping them away from your flowers as they are not big fans of this smell and they will avoid it. Again, this obviously will become a much smaller issue once your puppy figures out the proper area for digging.

Tip #4 – How to Stop Puppy Digging – Those Random Holes

It can be frustrating to see random holes dug throughout your nice yard. Puppies are known to return to a hole that they have started to dig to continue where they left off. If you fill the hole up with rocks, leaves and sticks and then cover it with dirt they will likely not mess with it anymore as things have dramatically changed for them. They do not like digging through such things and will move on to find other things to do.

Tip #5 – How to Stop Puppy Digging – A Good Firm No

When all else fails a firm no and redirection to their area for digging will eventually get through to them. Especially if you burry some of their favorite toys and a few treats in their sandbox. Over time with repetitive training your new puppy will gladly stay in their area for digging. As most of you know puppies love praise and rewards. They will learn when they are being bad that they are not rewarded and they know when they are in trouble. Once they start getting the attention and rewards for digging in their sandbox they will always use that location for their digging. Learning how to stop puppy digging takes some time but in the end it is very rewarding for both you and your new puppy.

New Puppy Training Techniques

When getting a new puppy you will have many things to take into consideration and obviously new puppy training should be at the top of your list. A new puppy is near equal to having a baby in the house as they rely upon you to care for them. This is obviously the best time to train them as they are at the best stage for learning as puppies. The quicker you can train your puppy you will realize you will have much better nights of sleep.

Excitement is always high when getting a new puppy because you can’t help but smile when you are around them. Believe it or not having an animal helps reduce stress from your life and they help being happier moments into it. With keeping all of this in mind you must realize this cute bundle of joy is going to grow up into a big dog. If you do not properly train your puppy while they are young you will end up having your hands full of trouble.

When starting with your new puppy training you must realize that consistency is key to training your puppy new tricks. If you are not consistent with your training the puppy will easily become confused and not know what to do. So remember, be consistent with all of your training so your new puppy can have a good life.

Now, when you’re first bring your puppy home it is going to take them some time to adjust to the new surroundings as it is an unfamiliar location to them. It is not uncommon for them to appear scared when first adjusting but they will quickly get over this. You should try to get the bed your puppy slept in when you get this as this will help comfort them in your new home. They can at least associate comfort with one thing when starting off in an unfamiliar environment. Just remember to be patient during this phase and help them adjust. Just think how you would feel if you were dropped into an uncomfortable location. It would obviously take you some time to adjust to your new environment.

When starting with your puppy you will want to crate train them as soon as you can. Believe it or not puppies actually like crates as they feel secure and they will learn that this is their area. They will also have their blanket from their previous place in their crate and this will help reinforce their comfort zone inside their crate. Crate training will provide many benefits for both you and your new puppy.

During this time it might be a challenge as your puppy adjusts. You will find that they might start whining or barking. This is normal and will pass in a few days, however, you need to be certain that you tell your puppy “NO!” in a stern voice when they are misbehaving. This will help them learn what incorrect behavior is. Just like when you discipline your puppy it is even more important to praise their good behavior. Dogs thrive on attention and praise and they will lean quickly that good behavior leads to praise and rewards.

In closing, remember that training your new puppy is going to take some time. However, remember that they are quick to learn at this stage. Always remember to be fair and consistent when training your new puppy. New puppy training can be fun and enjoyable for both you and your new puppy!

Many people quickly want to learn how to stop puppy jumping problems. I am sure we can all agree it is cute when your new puppy jumps up and whimpers to be picked up. However, allowing this type of behavior can lead to some very negative things in the future. While it is cute that your small puppy is now jumping on you, imagine a 100 pound dog doing the same thing, not as much fun now is it? There are several things you should take into consideration when dealing with this problem. First you need to address how you are reacting when your puppy is jumping. When your puppy starts to jump do you give them the attention they are seeking? Do you hold his treat or toy just out of reach to encourage their jumping? Believe it or not doing the above things will actually encourage your puppy to jump on you and others. You need to know what you are doing that is causing your puppy to jump and fix that issue.

How To Stop Puppy Jumping When You Come Home

When you arrive home your puppy is obviously going to be excited as they have not seen you all day. However, when you get home you should remain calm and not encourage your puppy to get more excited. You are best to let your dog out to use the bathroom when you first arrive home. This will allow them to burn off that pent up energy that they have. If your puppy does jump on you be stern and tell them “OFF!”. Never push, kick or hit your puppy with a knee when they jump on you. You can give them a slight bump to get them off of you. When your puppy is properly standing on the floor and not jumping on you should give them praise for their being good. You need to reinforce this behavior each time that they are behaving and they will quickly learn that jumping is not a rewarding behavior.

How To Stop Puppy Jumping When Guests Arrive

Obviously the last thing you want is your puppy jumping all over your guests. Most guests will not complain but I just like you, most don’t want a dog even as cute as a puppy jumping all over them. If your puppy is trained well enough have them sit and stay in one location when your guests arrive. If your puppy will most likely become excited at the sight of guests be sure to put them on their leash and have them sit. Only allow them enough of the leash to sit comfortably.

Once your gusts start arriving at your location just have them ignore your puppy until they are calm. I know this is easier said than done as everybody wants to play with the new puppy. However, to stop any issues you are having with jumping it is important that the puppy knows when to calm down. Your goal here is to have your puppy sit and remain in his location while you are talking with your guests. When you notice your puppy is behaving be sure to praise them and tell them that they are good. They will of course quickly pick up on this being the proper behavior. Once your puppy learns this you can let him freely visit your guests and they will remain calm and not jump on others.

How To Stop Puppy Jumping When Playing With Them

Of course all puppies get even more excited when you start playing with them. Always remember when your puppy jumps on you to tell them “OFF!”. You are best to have them sit if they are becoming too excited. Once they calm down a bit you can continue to play with them. When starting to train your puppy you are better off playing Frisbee or fetch as this will not encourage them to jump on you. Also remember not to tease them with their toy or treats as this will cause them to jump.

Remember, always use positive reinforcement when your puppy is behaving properly. Obviously when your puppy is misbehaving you correct that behavior quickly. Part of the training process is rewarding them when they do behave. This is one of the most critical training aspects for your puppy to become well behaved and you will have learned how to stop puppy jumping.

You will quickly learn there are only a few methods that you can attempt to stop puppy barking. Fortunately it is easy to control and fix while they are only puppies. Keep in mind that not all barking is bad as dogs of course bark! That is their thing to do. You have to understand this is the way your puppy makes themselves know, express feelings and to show you their needs. How is this for an interesting fact, there is only one dog breed that does not bark and that is the Basenji.

Before you attempt stopping your puppy from barking you need to identify what is causing them to bark.

What Are The Causes Of Puppy Barking and How To Stop Puppy Barking

You will see that puppies will bark for multiple reasons, just like humans vocally express themselves in different ways. Puppies will bark when they are excited, they will bark when they are mad and they will even bark if they become scared. Below you will find several reasons that you can expect for your puppy to start barking:

Barking for Territorial reasons

Barking to greet you

They may bark when hurt or sick

Barking to alarm you of something

Barking to get some attention

Barking out of frustration

Barking out of frustration

Compulsive barking issues

So as you can see from this barking is a main form of communication for puppies. You can’t completely stop your dog from barking just like you can’t completely make a person be silent. Just like we have to express ourselves with our voice, they express themselves by barking. Just understand that it is a normal behavior for them to bark at times.

How To Stop Puppy Barking

Now, just because we can’t complete stop your puppy from barking we can help control and pinpoint the issue causing it. When you notice that your puppy is barking you need to do the best that you can to determine exactly what is causing their barking. Usually you will see that their barking is excessive and it can be controlled to an extent. If you can determine that the barking is excessive and not normal you can control the issue. Find out the following to assist you with this:

When is your puppy barking?

What if your puppy barking at exactly?

Do you notice that there is something triggering your puppies barking?

You have to be careful how you control this barking. If you notice that your puppy is barking to protect its territory or they are alarmed at something it is a bad idea to yell at them for this. By scolding them for this it can lead to other problems such as aggression and even biting. After you yell at your dog they become confused as they don’t know why you are yelling at them. Because they are still having an issue that has not been resolved.

What you need to work on is making sure your puppy is comfortable in their territory. Try to find out what is causing them to bark and fix it for them and the barking will stop. This of course all starts with being the alpha leader of the household. By showing your puppy you are the leader of the pack they will know they are safe when you are around to protect their space. Another option is to remove the problem from their territory. By it being out of site it is out of mind for the puppy. Such ideas you can follow are closing the blinds in the room your dog stays in, have a privacy fence so they do not feel threaded by others and finally don’t let them have free access to a window as they will feel threatened by other people or animals around their territory.

In closing, keep in mind that it is normal for your puppy to bark. Do not yell at them for barking as this is their way to express themselves. Controlling barking in other ways is the best method. By following these tips you will quickly be on your way to learning how to stop puppy barking.

Many people regardless of their puppies breed have turned to clicker puppy training as it has become one of the most successful methods of puppy training to help control and dictate what your puppy will do with basic training commands. One of the best things to understand about clicker training is that it takes little time to perfect the technique and by using the proper clicker you will be able to teach your dog almost anything.

How Clicker Puppy Training Works

The basic idea behind clicker puppy training is your puppy associates the sound of the clicker with a command you give them. By using a well operating clicker your puppy can hear it from over twenty yards away as it gives a sharp and distinct sound. The main purpose behind this method of training is to reward your puppy with the sound of the clicker because of their proper response to commands.

It is important to understand that clicker training does not start with the clicker. You have to train your puppy to understand that the use of the clicker is their reward for good behavior. One of the best ways to start this method of training is to start with some treats and a relatively cheap clicker that you can buy from your local pet store or online.

The use of the clicker in this way is important for several reasons. Once the dog receives a treat and they hear the noise of the clicker you are rewarding their actions and praising them. When attempting to train a puppy with verbal words they may not interpret it the same each time. However, the clicker remains consistent and they learn and understand much quicker with this method of training.

How Clicker Puppy Training is Conducted

You will learn that there are three basic concepts to understand with clicker puppy training. Your fist step involves helping your dog understand that you want for them to do something. This could be a multitude of things like rolling over, sitting, lying down, speaking or any other trick that you are planning on teaching them. Now, once you have them do the trick you must reward them with the sound of the clicker and a treat.

It will take several attempts for your dog to comprehend everything and associate what they did leads to the reward in the end. Clicker puppy training works extremely well because they will respond to your commands instantly and this allows you to reward them quickly and that will in turn stay in their minds. Understand that it takes time for a verbal command to get through to your puppy.

After your puppy has done what you wanted for them to do and received their reward make sure you are consistent with your training as often as possible to reinforce the good behavior. It is not required to always use treats as a reward, praising them and petting them work very well and it is just as appreciated by your puppy.

How To Move On To Verbal Commands

After you have trained your puppy well enough with click training you will be able to move on to a verbal command that can be used at anytime without the aid of a clicker. The concept here is to say the command prior to using the clicker, click and reward the puppy. In no time the puppy will quickly learn how to use all three.

How to Stop a Puppy From Biting

It is not uncommon for new puppy owners to ask how to stop a puppy from biting, as most owners will at some point in the dog’s lifetime have to deal with the situation of a biting puppy and what it takes to resolve such behavior. When a puppy first starts biting it is only annoying, however as they get older, this can become a very dangerous situation. Not only is this a danger to strangers but it becomes one for you and your family If you notice that your puppy is biting, regardless of their age you need to take quick action to stop this type of behavior.

How to Stop the Biting While they are Still Puppies

Obviously the most simple and critical time to recognize this behavior and make sure it stops is while they are still puppies. If you have a puppy that is still six months or younger it is extremely easy to retrain this bad behavior because they are still in their learning stages of life.

Unfortunately a large majority of people make the assumption that their puppy is only playing or teething and not trying to cause any harm. What most people do not understand is their puppy is actually learning the ability to be the pack leader by doing this to show that they are in control. This becomes a critical time to stop your puppy from biting. This is where you need to start the proper training as they are at a level to learn while at a young age.

You will find that there are many techniques to help you learn how to stop a puppy from biting. The majority of these techniques copy how the puppy is treated with its other litter mates and of course the mother of the pack. You can lightly tap your puppy on the neck, give them a toy to chew on and making a whining noise when bitten are all good training aids. This will help them associate that biting people is not an acceptable behavior in the home. If you find that you are not having any success in breaking your puppy of this habit you will need to consider going to an obedience school or hire a dog trainer to help you.

How to Stop a Puppy From Biting At One Year Old

If you allow your puppy to bite at a young age they come to believe they are in charge of the pack and this will continue when they develop into a teenager at about one year of age. There are many issues that can contribute to the type of negative behavior. The first step should you do if you find your dog biting when they are one is to stop any physical game activities you do with your dog quickly. This obvious includes all games of dominance such as wresting and tug of war.

It is also important that you stop allowing your dog to run the house. Give them boundaries, cut them down to a specific range of motion, and even crate training them if necessary. If you have a dog in their teenage years that is still biting the best thing to do is to enroll into a dog obedience training program as soon as possible.

How to Stop Dogs from Biting as they get Older

If you continue to allow your dog to bite it will most likely turn into a major problem as they become adults. The dog might “turn on” their owner, but in reality, the dog always stays himself as the leader of the pack.

If you see that your dog is showing signs of aggression towards anyone after a year old you need to have this resolved promptly beacuse of the danger involved with the dog wanting to show who is dominate by attacking.

When learning how to stop dogs from biting, you need to start at as early an age as possible. Generally a dog that is healthy will not bite as an adult dog if they have had proper training as a puppy. Remember, if you are having troubles with how to stop a puppy from biting then enrolling in a puppy obedience course is a great idea.

Crate Training Puppies

Want to discover how important crate training puppies is? Believe it or not you are not alone on this subject. Every year, millions of dog owners around the country learn how to keep their dogs in a crate or separate room when they leave the house so they can reduce anxiety, destructive behavior and barking. Another key benefit to crate training your dog, especially a puppy is it will assist you in house breaking them and making your life easier in the process. I am sure many of you have issues with your new puppy wanting to sleep on your couch or in bed with you. This is a habit you will want to break early in the learning process.

Crate Training Puppies and the Value of the Crate to them

Crate training will be a new process to you and some wonder if it is safe and a healthy environment for their new animal. First please understand that it is safe and the majority of dogs love their crate because they know it is their domain. In the wild, a dog will seek out a small, safe space to burrow into that will keep them warm and safe. This feeling to them is similar in a crate, to them it is wonderful as it is a safe place that the control alone. By allowing your puppy to have free range in a large area will have problems differentiating their crate from it. This causes them to want to control the entire space which will lead to behavioral problems.

Crate Training Puppies and How To Do It Properly

Ideally, you will crate train your dog as a puppy. A full grown dog that has never been in a crate will have a harder time adjusting to the small space and may grow anxious. A puppy will also be a bit upset but adapts much quicker, and if the puppy never has the option to sleep with you in your bed, it will likely not have anything to be upset about.

It is best to place the crate in the family room where a lot of people will be. At night, you should put the crate in your bedroom to give them a safe presence nearby. Eventually, after a month or so, you should be able to leave them in one place, but for now, be close to keep them calm and safe.

When crate training puppies be sure the puppy has a clean area to sleep in, a toy, and access to water. The crate should be only big enough for him to sleep in. You do not want to have your puppy walking around in the cage as this will likely lead to potty training troubles. As long as they can turn around in the crate they are fine and it is not cruel to them.

When learning how to crate train a puppy, make sure you don’t pull the puppy from the crate if he gets upset. By running to the puppy each time they fuss you will be letting them know that anytime they want attention all they have to do is bark. You should only let the puppy out of the crate when you are ready. Remember you are the alpha leader and you should only let them out after they have been quiet for five minutes. Then, greet him with a lot of attention and even a treat to reinforce that he did it right.

At first, try to leave your puppy in the crate for short periods of time – an hour or two at a time. As they become older, you can increase the time in the cage to a full night or full day of work.

If you learn how to crate train a dog properly, you’ll be able to ensure your dog never gets too loud, destructive, or anxious when you leave. Not to mention while crate training puppies they adapt much quicker and this will be less stressful for the animal and other members of the house.
