Many people quickly want to learn how to stop puppy jumping problems.  I am sure we can all agree it is cute when your new puppy jumps up and whimpers to be picked up.  However, allowing this type of behavior can lead to some very negative things in the future.  While it is cute that your small puppy is now jumping on you, imagine a 100 pound dog doing the same thing, not as much fun now is it?  There are several things you should take into consideration when dealing with this problem. First you need to address how you are reacting when your puppy is jumping.  When your puppy starts to jump do you give them the attention they are seeking?  Do you hold his treat or toy just out of reach to encourage their jumping?  Believe it or not doing the above things will actually encourage your puppy to jump on you and others.  You need to know what you are doing that is causing your puppy to jump and fix that issue.

How To Stop Puppy Jumping When You Come Home

When you arrive home your puppy is obviously going to be excited as they have not seen you all day.  However, when you get home you should remain calm and not encourage your puppy to get more excited.  You are best to let your dog out to use the bathroom when you first arrive home.  This will allow them to burn off that pent up energy that they have.  If your puppy does jump on you be stern and tell them “OFF!”.  Never push, kick or hit your puppy with a knee when they jump on you.  You can give them a slight bump to get them off of you.  When your puppy is properly standing on the floor and not jumping on you should give them praise for their being good.  You need to reinforce this behavior each time that they are behaving and they will quickly learn that jumping is not a rewarding behavior.

How To Stop Puppy Jumping When Guests Arrive

Obviously the last thing you want is your puppy jumping all over your guests.  Most guests will not complain but I just like you, most don’t want a dog even as cute as a puppy jumping all over them.  If your puppy is trained well enough have them sit and stay in one location when your guests arrive.  If your puppy will most likely become excited at the sight of guests be sure to put them on their leash and have them sit.  Only allow them enough of the leash to sit comfortably.

Once your gusts start arriving at your location just have them ignore your puppy until they are calm.  I know this is easier said than done as everybody wants to play with the new puppy.  However, to stop any issues you are having with jumping it is important that the puppy knows when to calm down.  Your goal here is to have your puppy sit and remain in his location while you are talking with your guests.  When you notice your puppy is behaving be sure to praise them and tell them that they are good.  They will of course quickly pick up on this being the proper behavior.  Once your puppy learns this you can let him freely visit your guests and they will remain calm and not jump on others.

How To Stop Puppy Jumping When Playing With Them

Of course all puppies get even more excited when you start playing with them.  Always remember when your puppy jumps on you to tell them “OFF!”.  You are best to have them sit if they are becoming too excited.  Once they calm down a bit you can continue to play with them.  When starting to train your puppy you are better off playing Frisbee or fetch as this will not encourage them to jump on you.  Also remember not to tease them with their toy or treats as this will cause them to jump.

Remember, always use positive reinforcement when your puppy is behaving properly.  Obviously when your puppy is misbehaving you correct that behavior quickly.  Part of the training process is rewarding them when they do behave.   This is one of the most critical training aspects for your puppy to become well behaved and you will have learned how to stop puppy jumping.
