Learn How To Stop Puppy Chewing

Learning how to stop puppy chewing is a task many want to control but must understand that it is a natural thing for puppies to do on a daily basis.  Generally you will find that they are chewing on things because of pure boredom or because they are teething.  You do not want to stop your puppy from chewing but you want to make sure they know what the proper things are to chew on.  This is obviously a challenging task but they can be trained in a fairly quick time frame on proper things to chew.  Obviously helping them prevent boredom will greatly reduce the odds of them wanting to chew on your carpet, boots or couch! Why Should You Stop Puppy Chewing When new puppy owners get their new bundle of joy they assume it is fine if they chew on everything because after all it is considered natural.  Then you have those that will take the other extreme and yell at their puppy when they chew on something and this will cause your puppy to become confused.  This confusion you create for your puppy will lead to other additional behavioral problems that you will not want.  You will need to find the balance point of both of these that will help train your dog to understand that there are many things that they are allowed to chew on but other items are off limits for chewing.

Learning How To Stop Puppy Chewing

Learning the necessary skills to stop puppy chewing encompass several things.  For starters, it is important that you do not yell at or hit your dog for this behavior.  At times you will become extremely annoyed with your puppies chewing but it is critical that you do not take this out on your puppy for any reason.  This will only cause confusion for your puppy and as stated it will lead to additional behavioral problems.  Things you should take into consideration are:

Adjustment of Behavior – Instead of fighting an uphill battle with your puppy you should focus on training them the proper items to chew on in the house.  If you catch your puppy chewing on your boot, take a toy that is allowed for chewing and give it to them.  Tell them no when you take the boot from them and once they start chewing on their approved chewing toy you should praise them.  This will help them understand the proper things to chew on.

Make Sure You Keep Them Busy – A bored puppy will always look for things to get into.  So obviously the more entertained you can keep them the less boredom they will have.  When you are with your puppy it is important that you play with them and allow them to run around for exercise.  Obviously you can’t be with them at all times, so when you are away give them toys to play with because this will keep them entertained for the period of time that you are gone.

Proper Crate Training – By having your puppy crate trained this will drastically help you cut down on the trouble they can get into while you are gone.  By having them properly crate trained they can only get access to their toys while you are away and can’t create damage to other items within the house.

Remain Consistent With Your Training As you can see the overall theme with all training revolves around consistency.  As long as you remain dedicated to your training pattern with your puppy they will quickly learn the correct behaviors to follow.  With consistency you will see that learning how to stop puppy chewing is relatively easy.
